It seems that in the United States of American pregnant ladies are expecting the same problem I faced here in the UK. The lack of active maternity wear for those who want to continue to be in the great outdoors. Something to keep you dry and warm while you pursue your active lifestyle. What is even better about my Mother and Nature brand is after pregnancy the clothes still fit. Thanks to my innovative design incorporating a zip.
Maternity Hiking Gear
It was my love of the outdoors and hiking that led me to the frustration that there was nothing on the market once you became pregnant. Just because we become with child it does not mean we have to wrap ourselves in cotton wool. This time around with my second child I was happy to say that I went hiking before he was born and have been several times since he has been born, of course he was wrapped up nicely in my maternity coat.
Kasie Hunt the NBC News Capital Hill Correspondent had exactly the same issue.
I was just looking for some basic maternity outdoor clothes for an upcoming trip.
Turns out, most outdoor retailers try to carefully maintain a rugged, masculine image.
Pregnancy is apparently not part of that.
This is an absolute joke.

She went on to say
Hunt, an MSNBC News anchor, tweeted Tuesday that she was looking for some
“basic maternity outdoor clothes” for an upcoming trip, and was extremely disappointed with what she found.
“Turns out, most outdoor retailers try to carefully maintain a rugged, masculine image. Pregnancy is apparently not part of that,”
Hunt said. (source)
The Frustration Of The Active Maternity Ladies
We also tweeted to them and Kasie was kind enough to retweet us which got us some exposure to the USA market. However we are still not there yet and we do ship our active maternity wear to the USA

Abigail Wise the editor of the Outside magazine got involved and produced and article on the topic as well. Basically the active women of Canada and America wants active maternity wear so they can carry on with their life rather than put it on hold.
Active Maternity Wear & Exercising n Pregnancy
In the article on the Outside Online by Olivia Dwyer asked some searching questions and shared some great facts about excessing in pregnancy.
Leading experts and government policy echo that. “There’s a mindset that being sedentary makes for a healthier pregnancy, and that’s absolutely wrong,” says Gregory A. L. Davies, who has researched exercise during pregnancy for the International Olympic Committee. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 2.5 hours a week of aerobic activity for pregnant women and states that those accustomed to high-intensity aerobic workouts can safely continue (Full Article)
She went to ask some major manufacturers of outdoor clothing why they didn’t cater for the active maternity wear. Arc’teryx, North Face and Patagonia declined to comment on their lack of investment in this ever growing market. It seems that it is to big of a risk too invest for a 9 month event, however they do make kiddies clothes that only fit them for a matter of months !
Some Of The States Of America Mother and Nature Have Shipped The Active Maternity Wear To
It Seems American Retailers Don’t Cater For Active Maternity Wear
Back in 2018 a school teacher was preparing for some outdoor activity days whilst she was pregnant. At first she wasn’t worried about getting the maternity gear for hiking, she was just a little worried that she might slow everyone down being heavily pregnant. That was until she she started looking and then realised that they don’t make active maternity wear in America. Her husband just happened to be a reporter for the Fortune website so she was able to vent her frustrations to the world.
This is what the retailers had to say when asked about the outdoor maternity market.
“We are conscious about being aspirational and inclusive, and we always try to achieve a gender balance in who is representing our brand. You can look at all of those qualities, and they apply equally to the ambassadors who represent our brand, regardless of gender,” said Huggins.
Several major outdoor retailers, including REI, Icebreaker, Backcountry, and Athleta, either declined to comment or didn’t respond to interview requests about maternity sizing and nursing-friendly clothing options. Amy Montemerlo Roberts Full post.
Our Reviews
Of course I am going to rave about my outdoor maternity wear because I was in the same place as these American ladies and thats why I was determined to make my own. It has been a long journey getting but read our reviews on Mother and Nature. One of my favourites is jacket for pregnancy and beyond from Jenny in Hull. So what are you waiting for now you know we ship to America, order your maternity rain jacket and we can get shipping.
Maternity Winter Coat
Don’t get caught short this winter with a jacket that won’t fasten over your bump! The ONLY waterproof maternity jacket available in the world, and that’s no exaggeration! Also you have to remember that this maternity coat is wearable after birth, unlike the other maternity wear that you have to through out. Another great review below and she is still wearing the maternity jacket 2 years later.
This is the only maternity coat that will keep you warm in winter, unlike the maternity extenders panels. This coat was designed for the outdoors to let the active mums carry on being active. It’s healthy to stay active during pregnancy, not only physically but mentally as well. Once you give birth you will have more than enough days indoors adapting to your new lifestyle, especially if it s your first one. This coat will keep you warm and dry in the big outdoors.
This maternity fleece was shipped to Ingrid in Washington DC, the package arrived safe and sound in the USA despite the pandemic still raging
